Judge sets $500K bail for Saugerties woman accused of killing Greene County resident | Crime-and-public-safety

CATSKILL, N.Y. — Bail has been set at $500,000 for a Saugerties woman charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of a Cairo woman, the Greene County District Attorney’s Office said Friday.

Amber C. Akins, 40, pleaded not guilty Thursday during her arraignment before Greene County Judge Terry J. Wilhelm, who set the bail amount, the DA’s office said.

Crystal L. Borne, 39, was found stabbed about 1 a.m. May 14 on Lake Mills Road in Cairo and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities. Akins was arrested by state police shortly after the homicide and charged with second-degree murder. She has been in jail ever since.

State police said at the time that the stabbing happened “after a brief altercation.” Police did not provide a possible motive for the killing or say what kind of weapon was used.

Akins’ next court appearance is scheduled for June 21.

The maximum sentence for second-degree murder is 25 years to life in state prison.
